Turkey Lurkey

I'm not the only one who does this, right?

We were given a turkey right after Christmas, but since we'd just done Thanksgiving (x2) and had turkey for Christmas I wasn't really excited about doing another turkey right away.

I thought it was about time I got that turkey defrosting this week, and we had a nice (simple) turkey dinner on Tuesday night. That night I picked apart the turkey and put away 4-5 bags of turkey leftovers in the freezer for other meals.

All the bones (with the little bits of meat still on them), the skin, ((anything left)) went into the crockpot that night, filled with water and sat overnight on low.

Then on Wednesday I put the entire contents of the crockpot into a colander so that I could strain out the broth. There was enough ((delicious!!)) broth to make a big pot of turkey soup!

Then I picked all the little pieces of meat off the bones and out of the leftovers in the colander.

And then in a ((not so)) stroke of genius, I put the bones back in the crockpot and started them again, expecting another pot of delicious broth.

This is what's leftover ((inedible)) from the crockpot, minus the bones.

And there's the yummy broth ((crockpot #1)).

Crockpot #2 was a pure failure. It tasted gross. I guess I got all the goodness out the first time. I made soup in the crockpot w/ it and instead of a yummy soup, it almost turned my stomach every time I smelled it. It wasn't spoiled, but I think the broth started to taste more like bone, rather than turkey. Soo... oh well, we wasted a bit of turkey in that soup and a few veges. But I'm still getting about 7 meals out of that 17lb turkey! Which is pretty awesome, considering it was a **FREE** turkey. :)
