Good books we've read lately

Read alouds:

Make Way for Ducklings
Blueberries for Sal
Ellis Island
The Little House Series
(we are through the first 3, reading the 4th now)
The Dr Seuss books
(Current favorites: Naomi - The Foot Book, Oceana: Green Eggs & Ham)
The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter
(Current favorites: Oceana - The Tom Kitten story where he gets cat-napped by the mice)
All Of A Kind Family
(This is one of my favorites from childhood, it's a whole series about a family of 5 Jewish girls living in NYC around the turn of the century)

My most recent book:
Heaven is for Real
My friend/sister Christina gave it to me for my birthday and after continuous nagging on her part (Iloveyouanyways...) I got through it. Fabulous read.

Also in the reading pile:
Crucial conversations
Homeschooling: Take a deep breath ---- you can do this!
The Carb Lover's Diet
The Power of a Praying Wife
Teaching Children
For The Children's Sake
Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti

  1. I loved the All of a Kind family books! Can't wait to read them to my daughter. For the Children's Sake is one of my favourites, too. :)

  2. Current children's favorites: Corderoy (OBVIOUSLY), Thank You, Mr. Faulkner, Chrysanthemum and Julius the Baby of the World (both by Kevin Henkes), and The Day Leo Said I Hate You. (Now, the last one sounds weird, but really, it's about how to deal with angry feelings between a mom and son. It's such a good one to act out!!! Kids always come away with how they SHOULD act!!!)

  4. I used to babysit for four siblings ages " 3, 5, 7 and 9" ( one girl three older brothers) They LOVED "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs" and oddly a book that as adults we would probably " not approve of" ..."The Stupids Step Out" they thought this book hilarious- who can account for what kids will find funny ?

  5. The Power of a Praying Wife was absolutely marriage-changing for me. As was the follow-up workbook to go w/ the book. I did it with a girlfriend. Great study!

And please tell me what the carb lover's diet book says. I mean....if it seems balanced & effective. I can't handle another book or "diet" that tells you to drink diet soda all day (because after all, it's carb-free!) and put fake sweetners on everything.

  6. LOVED all of a kind family series...still do!
The Mitchell series by Hilda von Stockum as well as her Bantry Bay series...WONDERFUL!
Baby Island by Carol Ryrie Brink is a wonderful read for little girls.
My Personal Favorite ( I read it at least once a year for nearly 20 years) is The Family Nobody Wanted by Helen Doss. True story , written by the mother, about adopting multi racial kids just after the depression era, WWII time frame.
