Wearing blue for Alex

Because the r-word isn't acceptable.

  1. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! My uncle (who had Down Syndrome) died a few years ago in his early fifties; my younger brothers still use "retarded" as an insult. I'm posting a link to our family blog!

  2. Thank you for this post. I'm a lurker and have NEVER commented on anyone's blog, even though I've read yours for over a year. I'm delurking to say thanks for having a post about this. Its timely for me, as today, my 6 year old little boy was tested for learning disabilities. His IQ came out 71 (which is borderline). I'm heartbroken. My older son is also learning disabled with an IQ of 68(I also have two children in between who are not learning disabled). My oldest son has heard the R word said to him many times by other kids. It seems to be acceptable to do so. My best friend constantly uses the r word jokingly(I never say anything and try to ignore the way it makes me feel), and even used it today (unaware of our test results). I HATE that word and wish it would disappear. Maybe with more awareness, it will. I will begin speaking up and am ashamed I haven't up til now.
