A commenter asked about our engagement story. If only they knew what they were getting into...
Matt and I had been out on "Outstation" - EBIers will remember that - basically we were helping out at a church for the evening. We'd been there for 3 or 4 hours with a bunch of othe people, and when we got back to campus he asked if I wanted to go for a ride. This seemed ridiculous to me, since we'd just driven half an hour from Caledonia - but I had a feeling he was going to ask me. He had gone out during lunch that day to drive into Henrietta (nearest mall, 30 mins away). He had NEVER done that, didn't tell me why he was going, and didn't mention it again. He was more than a little suspicious.
We headed out for a park closeby, but when we got there it was about 11:10pm and the park closed at 11. We didn't want to get pulled over (it was a big park - Mendon Ponds EBIers) and so we drove back towards Lima, hoping to find somewhere else to go. I saw - what I thought was - a park on our way through Honeoye Falls. There was snow on the ground and it was dark, but there were a few streetlights. So we parked at the Veterans Club and went for a walk. Around the back side of the park Matt told me that he loved me, gave me a kiss and asked me to marry him. I had told him I didn't want to hear "I love you" until it was "I love you, and will you marry me." He then gave me his grandmother's wedding ring that had been given to him. I was enormous - it was big on my middle finger, but I put it on anyways. It was freezing cold - Early March in Western NY - so we walked back to the car after a few minutes. When we got back in the car, Matt handed me a card. I was sort of laughing inside because I was thinking, "Is this a 'Thank you for saying Yes' card?" So we sat there for a minute while I opened the card. Just as I was about the open the card up I saw a blue and red flashing light. That's right - Midnight in a parking lot and we got pulled up by a cop. He came over to the window and asked what we were doing, and Matt nervously said, "Uh, I just proposed." To prove my point I turned the card so he could see my engagement right wired inside the card!!!!! He bumbled a few things about I'm sorry and take as long as you want, and headed back to his car.
About a month later we were driving past the "park" and I saw "Memorial Park". And realized.... IT WAS A CEMETARY! They were flat headstones! I didn't see them because of the snow! When I asked Matt if he knew, he said yes. I couldn't believe it.
So I got proposed to in a cemetery and then got pulled up by a cop. That's my engagement story....

ReplyDeleteThat is too too funny!!! Thanks for sharing....my darling husband didn't even really propose...we were talking on the phone, it was about 3a.m. and he said, "So, what do you think about getting married?" well, this year will be 17 years...but I wish it would have been a little more romantic. We eloped so no wedding pics either but we have a nice life and a beautiful 11 year old daughter, so that is all that is important!!!
