technical question

i saw some bloggers mention it today:

being able to see what people's searches have led them to your blog.

like if someone were to search encephalocele - would it bring them here? joshua matthew, etc.

does anyone know how to do that?

i can't for the life of me find a search engine that explains it. Argh.

  1. I use StatCounter-- very easy and it allows you to track what search words people are using to find your site. :) Hope this helps!

  2. I believe it''s a live traffice feed from...http://feedjit.com/. I think you use a map like theirs already... I don't have it, but I have seen it on friends blogs...check it out and see if it is what you mean????http://shootinstraight.blogspot.comleft column. toodles, Sheila

  3. You need to install something like statcounter on your blog. www.statcounter.com - it is a little program that will do that kind of counting/keeping track for you.

  4. When I did a search on Google for 'encephalocele Joshua' (without any quotes) I came up with a number of hits for your Joshua. People often have a stat counter/tracker (such as Sitemeter (www.sitemember.com)) that shows them what search term (if any) was used.

    Does that help?

  5. Let me start off by saying that I don't work for the company...but if you were to set up an account with BlogCounter (http://blogcounter.com) it tracks the visitors to your site. Unfortunately it would only start once you have an account so you wouldn't know any past history.

    Hope that helps!

  6. I can't expalin it either Susie but I do kow that when we got Elijah's diagnoses I typed in the words given to me by my dr. Occipital encephalocele. I typed this in various ways for 48 hours and for some reason when I typed "how long can a child live with occipital encepphalocele" YOU popped up. Iv'e tried it since and it doesn't always work. I GUESS THATS NOT MUCH HELP HUH?!?!

  7. Ive asked this same question as well. The best i have come up with is adding a site meter to your site:
    www.sitemeter.com
This keeps track of how many people visit your blog and where they are from.
    Actually, www.statcounter.com is better.
anyway, once you add that to your template, then you should be able to find out how people are coming to your blog.
So, start with statcounter, and go from there. Feel free to email me if you need any help. Some of this stuff is still new to me, but I can try to help you through it the best i can.

  8. On your blog counter it should have an option. I have a blog counter from blogpatrol.com and you can go in and see where people are viewing from, what pages they viewed and also what they searched for that led them to your blog. I don't really know how yours works, but that is what I can do with mine.
    Hope this helps!

  9. aahh, I just clicked on your counter and it does not have that option yet. If you switch to a different one, you could get this option. You can even choose what number it begins with so you don't lose your hits numbers you already have.

  10. Susie,

I love your blog. I've been reading for about two months now, and you are an inspiration. Just thought I'd preface that.

To answer your question, you can use a hit tracker to find who, where, and how people find your blog. You have a counter, it's possible it offers some sort of feature like that. If not, I use a sitemeter from sitemeter.com. It's free and easy. You can view your visitors by referrals and it will tell you which search engine they used and what words they searched for.

    Hope this helps!

And one more thing... thank you for being so raw and real. I know your life isn't easy. I know things probably won't be easy for a long time. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad, the fear and the hope, the anger and the love. It is amazing and encouraging to see someone struggle so transparently and watch them win.

    God Bless,
    Theresa

  11. If you go to statcounter.com and get the code for a counter, one of your options is "keyword analysis" and that's where you see who searched and found you based on what keyword.

  12. On the page where you create a post is a place to leave a "Label." These are words that describe your posts, for example, some you might use are Joshua, Oceana, Ship, Grief, Moving, 'Cele, etc.... These words can be used to search for posts of that topic.

  13. Found your blog through a friend of mine. I have followed your story for about 3 months and your family has really touched me. You are all in my prayers.

For your "technical" question...I use statcounter.com for my tracking. You can see what searches people used and how many times they return to your blog, where they came from ,etc.. I also have feedjit which is a live traffic feed that tells you the same type of info but you can post this one on your blog and others can see your "blog traffic"

    Good luck!

  14. i actually have been wanting to know that too, and i've been thinking about posting for more info on it... however, you do have a larger crowd following you, so if you do indeed find out, please post about it and that way i'll know too :) thanks!

  15. Your family is absolutly adorable! So glad you stopped by my blog. And thanks for adding my link. :) I'll get you added right away.

You can look up google analytics and put that on your blog to see what people search to get to your blog. That's what I have. It doesn't help bring people to you it just tells you who and how they got there.

    talk to you soon,

    Brittany

  16. Hi, I don't believe I have ever written on your blog comments before, but when I read it today about a search, I decided to try and see what I can come up with. So, I went to google.com and wrote in "blogs of children with encephalocele" and in there is your blog....so I thought I would let you know that...its very easy to search out with google. there is an empty bar area where you type in what you want to search out. Hope this helps you. I have been praying for your family for quite awhile, since I found this site from somewhere, I am not even sure who's blog I found it on....Wendy

  17. I know if you have statcounter, you can login to your account at their website and one of the features allows you to see how people got to your site. I haven't blogged on a blogger blog in ages, so there might be other services that people use. I think the more people that link to your blog makes it come up higher in searches on google.

  18. As the others said you can use sitemeter. I love it! I started using it becaue i came across a blog that someone made private because on her site meter she was able to tell someone did a search that made her feel "weird" -- something like "little boys" or "favorite little boys" == something like that. Anyway, I decided i wanted ot make sure there were no pediphiles who came to my blog. Not that it would tell me. However, it would give me an "idea' if someone was weird.

Since then, I've been able to tell I have LOTS of lurkers and wehre they are from.

    :)

  19. Personally, I'd recommend installing Feedjit, but the free version only shows the last 10 hits (click ins and click outs).

Then I'd install the free version of SiteMeter which will show you the last 100 clicks in under referrals.

I use both on both my blogs and it's definitely interesting. Plus you find some other great sites in the process.

  20. Oh, and I'm not 100% sure where I found your site anymore. I'm pretty sure it was linked either on LiveJournal or Babycenter but I honestly can't remember which.
