If you don't like flabby skin, run away!

So, back ---- waaaaaaaaay back ---- I promised I'd blog about my weight loss journey.

Ahem.

I'm sure you all took my silence to mean I was running marathons and just too busy to blog about it.

Right?

Yeah, I didn't think you'd buy that. Oh well.

So here's the truth. I tried for about a day. And I drank "enough" water - maybe twice.

About three weeks ago, I was mistaken for pregnant. That was a Sunday.

Monday morning I was on a diet. (The Carb Lover's Diet) I took the information, mish-mashed it a little bit, and as of Friday night I am/was down 4lbs. Progress!

And last Monday (ok, so it was Wednesday before I started) I joined up with a bunch of FB mommies who wanted to try about C25K. I did my 2nd run last night. (Yes, I'm behind a day, but that's just how I roll --- I'm about 6 weeks behind in my Beth Moore Bible Study homework...)

It was *about time* I blogged where I'm at. I actually feel that I look thinner than I did 2 weeks ago. Ok, I *know* I look thinner than 2 weeks ago. When I started about I seriously looked 5 months pregnant. Call it bloating, water retention, sagging muscles, lack of muscle tone --- whatever. I looked pregnant. And since my pants don't fit, it's a good thing I mailed my maternity wear off to my cousin Dorothy so I couldn't go grab them!

What's that? Stripes and plaid don't match? What do you want from me? It's 1am....

I normally (without effort previously) weighed about 120-125 lbs. Hate me if you will. I hate skinny me too. But since the beginning of my second pregnancy (mid-September '10) I've gained 25lbs. 25! In 9 months. That's sick.... I don't have a baby to show for all that. At first it was only about 15-18. And then I miscarried at Christmas, and it was cold, holiday foods, misery-loves-dessert .... and 144lbs bounced up at me like the jiggly half-cooked-baby bump did in the mirror.

140! Headed for 130. I could care less about the number anymore. I'm 26, I don't expect my body to look 19 again (and I bought my first bathing suit since then tonight... no wonder that size XS/2 didn't fit....). But I do expect my body to not look pregnant all the live-long-day. Because I'm not and I don't wish to be right now. So, for the first time --- in my entire life --- I am dieting and exercising. Do I feel great? Physically, no. I want to curl up on the sidewalk whenever I run. But psychologically, I'm proud of what I've accomplished.

So, here's to 130 and running 5kms!

Edited to add: The Carb Lover's Diet is not a low or no carb diet. I have no patience for diets that cut out major food groups. Carb Lover's Diet is written by (I think) Health Magazine editors. It's basically whole-foods living. The premise is that if you eat higher carb foods (good carbs, whole wheat bread, bananas, etc) you'll train your body to work harder at breaking down foods. For me this means cutting out a lot of processed breads --- but not completely. If I go onto a "deprivation" diet, I give up in a day or two. Just thought that it needed said.

  3. I did the C25K and it was wonderful to get in shape! I have run 7 (including the Halloween at Hershey, which is a great run if you are looking for one to run at the end of your program. I will be running it again this year!). I am now training for the Hershey Half Marathon! YIKES!

Beware cutting out carbs. Carbs are not bad. Processed carbs are bad, but natural simple and complex carbs are very good for you and you need them, especially if you plan on running. Why not try eating clean instead? Check out cleaneatingmag.org for more info. It is much healthier for you and your kids, and you don't cut out carbs. You will lose weight on it.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions about running or clean eating. amthompson07@gmail.com.

  4. Wow. I am really happy for you. Even proud a little, but that's weird because we've never actually met.
I know your pain girl. I have been a svelte and happy 120-126 my whole life, save for my two pregnancies. (And I'm 36, so hate away. I hate me too.) Then something happened. I just, uh, gained weight. It totally sucked. I have been busting my bottom -- my big ole bottom -- to knock the pounds off. It's not easy, but it's working.
Definitely keep us posted. You are an inspiration.
(And, in the interest of full disclosure, I once watched a video of you with your girls on your blog and you were SO SKINNY I started hating you.)

  5. You can do it! I used to weigh 113 before kids and 9 weeks ago I weighed 154. I decided it was time to stop being lazy and get to work. I am on week 7 of couch to 5k and it's awesome! I never used to run and hated it and now I am running 2 miles a day! I now weigh 141 and am soooo close to being in the 130s again! My goal is 125-130. If i can do it with four toddlers anyone can. Good luck !!

  8. I love this post and feel encouraged to continue at my- also first- diet/exercise plan (lose it.com is a great site for tracking calories, btw, if interested)! And KUDOS to you for showing what pregnancy does to the majority of our tummies. Mine looks pretty much identical- plus some extra "love" haha. But I too find a feeling of accomplishment even in my sad, pathetic mile runs hee he. Ya' gotta start somewhere :) :)

  9. It is nice to see a picture of your belly.... because it looks alot like mine.... only I weigh way more than you! But it was inspirational to see you, whom I consider thin, with the same kind of baggy skin left over from being pregnant that I have!

Good luck with your weight loss journey!

  11. You look great, and most of all, you should be proud of yourself! Perhaps I should take my own advice. I am pretty sure I wasn't even 145 lbs in 6th grade if ya know what I mean. I'm on a healthier track too, I just have a much longer road. Enjoy your runs and your journey.

  12. Good for you!

Also remember to keep your sugars away from your fats. The body will choose to burn sugar and store fat, which is why the fries and milkshake combo are so trecherous. But, if you eat one then the other a few hours apart, not so bad.

  13. ok, I could have written this post! I weigh more now than i did right after both of my pregnancies( and I pack on close to 35 during those!!) since last summer I had put on 15- 20 lbs by this past spring. I m dieting and exercising for the first time and I physically hate it as well. I'm eating the same way you are describing as well. I'm not trying to get back to my size 0 but I have this pair of shorts that I wore 18 mos. after Cohen was born and I can't even get them up to my waist!! Those are my goal....if I could wear them 18 mos. after my last pregnancy, I have no excuse for not getting in them now!! Keep up the good work!!
